Ocean Frontiers: The Dawn of a New Era in Ocean Stewardship

Ocean-Frontiers-DVD-Cover-Web-2x2The first film in the award-winning Ocean Frontiers film series, Ocean Frontiers: The Dawn of a New Era in Ocean Stewardship, takes you on an inspiring voyage to coral reefs, seaports and watersheds across the country, where unlikely allies—farmers, shippers, scientists, fishermen and conservationists—are working together to sustain the sea and our ocean economies.

Ocean Frontiers is divided into four chapters, showcasing collaborative marine planning in different parts of the US: Massachusetts Bay, Florida Keys, Iowa/Gulf of Mexico & the Oregon coast. The film is available in three different lengths: 20-min, 60-min, and 80-min. Many people show the short version of the film at the start of a meeting on ocean planning or to their colleagues over lunch. The longer films are screened for the public, government agencies, stakeholder groups and students.

Ocean Frontiers II: A New England Story for Sustaining the Sea

Ocean-Frontiers-II-DVD-Cover-Web-2x2The second installment in the series is Ocean Frontiers II: A New England Story for Sustaining the Sea. Off the shores of New England, in a region steeped in old maritime tradition, comes a modern wave of big ships, energy industries, and a changing climate, now testing the limits of an already crowded sea. But in a pioneering trial of far-sighted planning—pushed by blueprints for offshore wind energy—old residents and new are coming together to keep their ocean and livelihoods alive.

This film serves as an excellent tool for conveying the importance and value of collaborative ocean planning for all aspects of ocean resource management and ecological sustainability. Many federal, state and tribal coastal planning representatives share the film with their colleagues at brown-bag lunches and in planning meetings and conferences. Educators across the country show the film to their students – from middle schoolers up to the university level.

The Great Bear Sea: Reflecting on the Past—Planning for the Future

GBS DVDIn May 2015 the third film in the Ocean Frontiers series, The Great Bear Sea: Reflecting on the Past–Planning for the Future, was released. The Great Bear Sea is a wild expanse of ocean off the shore of British Columbia where whales, wolves, bears and humans thrive in rich coastal ecosystems. The Great Bear Sea is also a place where worlds collide – a place full of historic conflicts, emerging struggles over ocean resources, and globally leading solutions.

Amid these growing demands on British Columbia’s coastal waters, 18 First Nations and the Province of British Columbia (Marine Planning Partnership) have crafted marine plans for the Great Bear Sea to protect marine ecosystems and build sustainable coastal economies. Meet people and communities along the coast of British Columbia who are working to implement the marine plans — to sustain their marine environment, livelihoods and cultures.
